Police officers will be present during drop-off and pick-up times at the Northfield Community School and schools in Linwood.

Northfield Mayor Vince Mazzeo said schools Superintendent Janice Fipp and police Chief Robert James have been working together on this program, which is in response to the Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre last month, .

James said the same activity will take place in all Linwood schools to ensure that police presence is more visible. James is chief for both cities.

Officers will also make unannounced, random visits to the schools.

“We want to keep them guessing,” James said of any potential attackers.

The chief said this will be a duty taken on by all ranks, not just junior officers.

Northfield police began the new patrols just before winter break, and it will continue until and unless “the chief after me decides to stop it,” James said.
