Six classrooms and the auditorium in Ocean City High School will be closed due to mold problems Thursday, but school will still open for the first day of class.

Ocean City Business Administrator Thomas Grossi said Thursday afternoon that clean-up crews would be working through the night to remediate the issues he said were first found late Tuesday night and early Wednesday.

The district is the third in recent days to encounter the issue, and Grossi blamed it on exceptional humidity in recent days.

“The high humidity the last couple of days has put a lot of schools back,” Grossi said. “The HVACs just can’t keep up.”

Grossi said the classrooms and auditorium would likely be closed through the week in order for tests to confirm the mold is fully removed. Coastal Environmental Compliance of Hammonton, which has also performed remediation in Somers Point this week, is doing the cleaning in Ocean City.

Grossi also said the HVAC systems in Ocean City’s high school are zoned so that air issues in one zone should not affect other rooms that will remain open. He said classes will be rearranged to accommodate students that would have been taught in the closed classrooms.
