An Ocean City kayaker died Saturday after he was pulled unconscious from the ocean.

Gary Pasternak, 59, was pronounced dead at Shore Medical Center in Somers Point, after he was found floating unconscious in the ocean off 15th Street.

A search began at about 10:25 a.m. Saturday when an unmanned kayak was found floating about 300 yards off shore, police Capt. Steve Ang said.

City police and lifeguards, along with the U.S. Coast Guard and New Jersey State Police joined in the search, Ang said. Pasternak was discovered a short time later.

Lifeguards immediately began CPR, and the man was transported to the hospital.

It appears Pasternak entered the ocean near 21st Street sometime around 9:30 a.m. Saturday, according to the initial investigation.

The death is being investigated by the State Police Marine Services Division, Atlantic City Station.
