Inspectors at the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Facility in Lacey Township have found a pinhole leak in a steam supply pipe, according to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

The active leak was found late Monday on a flange to a piping weld on the reactor’s “head spray” system. Inspectors found the leak during a steam supply leak test, the NRC said in a news release.

The leak was classified as being due to “degraded condition” and was deemed to be a nonemergency, however, any “welding or material defects in the primary coolant system” are required to be reported, the NRC stated.

Oyster Creek has been in a cold-shutdown mode since before Hurricane Sandy struck the region as part of a lengthy refueling process.
