MARGATE — After numerous residents have claimed to see a large deer lurking around Ventor and Margate, the deer — the island’s local version of Big Foot — was caught on film Saturday.

Margate Firefighter Mike Palmer said he was on his way to work Saturday morning when he saw the elusive creature himself.

Even though he heard the stories, Palmer said he only felt one thing when he saw it: shock.

“I had heard people had seen the deer in the area the last couple of weeks,” Palmer said. “The first reaction was I got my phone out and took pictures.”

It was when the deer started running, Palmer switched to video and captured the animal galavanting through the empty streets of the island community.

Palmer said he saw the deer at the intersection of Monmouth and Clermont avenues at about 7 a.m. He was en route to the fire station when he saw the animal.

Although Palmer said he has not seen the deer a second time, he said he has been driving slower to ensure he does not have an unfortunate accident with the animal.

He said firefighters have not alerting residents to be looking out for the animal, but he hopes people take their time while driving now.

“It’s a shame the deer’s over here,” he said. “We don’t want anything bad to happen to the deer.”
