MOUNT HOLLY - Olympic gold medalist Carl Lewis is planning to announce his "political plans" in New Jersey.

Lewis said Sunday night that he planned a news conference Monday. He did not offer details, but Assemblyman Herb Conaway, R-Burlington, Camden, has told The Philadelphia Inquirer that Lewis was in negotiations to run for the state Senate in the 8th District.

Hammonton, Atlantic County, will become part of the 8th District, which includes much of Burlington County, under the newly redrawn legislative district map.

Lewis lives in the district. Republican Dawn Addiego currently holds the seat.

A message seeking comment was left with a spokesman for the Democratic State Committee.

Lewis won four gold medals at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, defended his 100-meter title in Seoul in 1988 after Ben Johnson was stripped of the medal for doping and won the long jump in four straight Summer Olympics.
