A 73-year-old Egg Harbor Township man died after he was struck by a vehicle while crossing the Black Horse Pike Wednesday night.

Enrique Acosta, 73, was crossing the eastbound lanes of the pike at Fernwood Avenue, adjacent to Storybook Land, at 5:34 p.m. when he was struck by a pickup truck on the roadway operated by John Edward Pino, 73, of Springfield Pa., police said in a release.

Acosta was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Trauma Unit in Atlantic City, but was pronounced dead upon arrival, police said.

The intersection has a traffic light. The eastbound part of the pike was closed for about three hours as police cleared the scene and investigated the incident.

The crash is currently under investigation, police said.

The road is annually ranked among the most dangerous in the state for pedestrians by the nonprofit organization Tri-State Transportation Campaign. In its most recent report the pike was tied for fourth-most dangerous in the state due to six pedestrian fatalities between 2008 and 2010.
