A pit bull in Middle Township attacked a child and then a police officer this week, resulting in charges against the dog’s owner, police said.

Police responded to Vermont Avenue in the Rio Grande section of town around 5:30 p.m. on Monday for a report of a bitten child. When an officer arrived, the dog attacked and bit her as well, and the officer fired her gun to protect herself.

The dog was not hit, but fled to the backyard. Both the officer and child went to Cape Regional Medical Center for treatment and were released with minor injuries.

Middle and Lower township animal control officers responded to seize the dog, and it is now in a quarantine, as per Cape May County Health Department guidelines, police said.

Police charged the dog’s owner, Morris Fitzpatrick, 43, with having an unlicensed dog and allowing the dog to wander. The investigation is still active and other charges are pending.
