A Pleasantville man who was assaulted last month, allegedly by his neighbor, has died.
Paul J. Madara, 66, was beaten with a piece of wood during an altercation just after 8 p.m. Aug. 28, authorities said. He was hospitalized in critical condition and died over the weekend, the Atlantic County Prosecutor's Office confirmed.
Joseph McCarten, 51, of Pleasantville, was arrested and charged with second-degree aggravated assault and weapons offenses for allegedly striking Madara at a home in the 600 block of Doughty Road.
McCarten has been held on $35,000 full cash bail since. It was not immediately clear whether the charges have been upgraded since Madara's death.
This is the first homicide of the year in Pleasantville. An investigation is still ongoing in a police-involved shooting that left a city man dead.
Anyone with information about the attack on Madara can call the Major Crimes Unit at 609-909-7800 or the Pleasantville Police Department at 609-641-6100.
