An Absecon man was arrested Tuesday in an alleged carjacking attempt at the Hamilton Mall, police said.

Officers responded to a report of a man attempting to push a victim into a van before entering the vehicle at the mall parking lot at about 5:45 p.m. While still en route, police were told that a witness had intervened and was chasing the suspect on foot.

Based on the description provided by another witness, police located and arrested the suspect, identified as Willie White Jr., 52, in the merchandise pickup area of Sears.

White was charged with attempted carjacking, criminal restraint and simple assault. He was held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $100,000 full cash bail.

No one was injured in the incident.

The case is still under investigation.

According to the state Department of Corrections, White served nearly six months earlier this year for contempt of court under the state's Prevention of Domestic Violence Act. He was released on June 1.
