HAMMONTON – Michael Hetzel, 42, of Hammonton, was arrested and charged with robbery Friday afternoon after police recovered $4,400 in currency on him, police said Saturday.

Hetzel was charged with robbery, possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, Lt. Mark Fiorentino said. He was being held on $100,000 bail at the Atlantic County Jail.

Patrolman Donald Kunen and Fiorentino arrested Hetzel shortly after he left TD Bank on the White Horse Pike, where he used a note to execute the robbery, Fiorentino said. Police also recovered a .22-caliber handgun from the suspect.

Fiorentino credited a cooperative effort among Hammonton police officers and dispatch, and employees of several banks in town, for assisting in the case. Employees of Sun Bank, Susquehanna and Bank of America all reported a man behaving suspiciously in their lobbies, police said, before the robbery at TD Bank.

“I’d like to thank the employees of all the banks, because without their descriptions, this wouldn’t have happened,” Fiorentino said.

He also said the FBI was involved and investigating the case.
