Bridgeton police say 36-year-old George A. Lewis was fatally shot outside his home in the 300 block of Spruce Street late Saturday night. Lewis was hosting a party at the house, and was shot once during an altercation while the party was ongoing. No arrests have been made.

BRIDGETON — Authorities continued to investigate the fatal shooting of a 36-year-old city man outside his house late Saturday.

George A. Lewis died after being shot once in the 300 block of Spruce Street around 11 p.m., they said.

Lewis was hosting a party at his house Saturday night, said Capt. Michael Gaimari of the Bridgeton Police Department. Lewis suffered the fatal wound during an altercation that occurred while the party was in progress, he said.

Lewis died en route to a hospital while city emergency personnel worked to save his life, Gaimari said.

No arrests have been made in connection with the killing, which was under investigation by city police and the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office, Gaimari said. Authorities were, for the moment, releasing no more information about the crime, he said.

No one at Lewis’ home would comment about what happened Saturday night.

Contacted by phone, Scarlett Gross, who identified herself as a close friend of Lewis, said she was too upset to talk about what happened.

She would not comment on what Lewis did for a living. When asked for other information about Lewis, Gross said he “loved his dirt bike and stuff.”

“He wasn’t a violent person,” Gross said. “He didn’t get into any trouble or nothing.”

Neighbors of the brown, one-story house would not comment about the shooting.

Lewis’ death was the second gun-related fatality in Bridgeton this year.

On Jan. 16, 34-year-old Jermarl Dawkins was shot multiple times and found dead in a field on the property of Burlington Manor Apartments on South Burlington Road.

Authorities said they found Dawkins, who lived on Sunset Avenue, when they responded to reports of “man down and gunshots” about 6 p.m.

Dawkins was apparently visiting someone at the apartment complex before he was shot, according to law enforcement officials. Detectives interviewed witnesses and gathered forensic evidence at the scene, they said.

No arrests have yet been made in connection with Dawkins’ slaying.

The area where Dawkins was killed is just a short distance from Lewis’ home.
