A Ventnor man was fatally stabbed in Atlantic City late Thursday night, becoming the third homicide victim in the city this year.

Police found Oscar O. Mendez, 28, stabbed after responding to a 911 call at about 11:30 p.m., saying a man had collapsed in the street at Texas and Pacific avenues. No details were given about where the stabbing may have occurred.

While checking on the man, police discovered he had been stabbed. Emergency workers gave him cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene, and he was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, where he was pronounced dead at about 1 a.m.

The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office’s Major Crimes Unit is investigating the homicide. It is the fifth killing in the county this year.

Nine people had been killed in the city by this time last year, with a total of 14 homicides in the county.
