Police are investigating a shooting in Atlantic City after the victim was found at his apartment -- in possession of heroin.

Police responding to a shot-fired call at about 9:30 p.m. in the 800 block of North Virginia Avenue didn't find the victim, Sgt. Monica McMenamin said. A group of males on the scene told police a male was shot and then left in a gold car.

But the victim, Mikal Wellman, 18, was found at his apartment a short distance from the shooting, where he walked, McMenamin said.

Police did find a car matching the description at Schoolhouse Apartments, with several men inside. They were not related to the shooting, but both had outstanding warrants and were taken into custody.

Medical personnel working on Wellman found drugs and a large amount of cash in his clothing, McMenamin said. He was arrested for possession of heroin, and taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center's City Campus.

His wounds are not considered life-threatening. The bullet appears to have traveled through the drugs that were in his pocket, McMenamin said.

There is no suspect information at this time.
