GALLOWAY TOWNSHIP - An erratic driver was killed Thursday after colliding with an SUV driven by a member of the Atlantic County's Prosecutor's Office on the White Horse Pike Thursday, authorities said

Galloway police said the driver - whom they did not identify - was been seen operating erratically by witnesses. The driver then caused a crash that led to the motorist's death.

The resident drove a 2003 Pontiac Sunfire eastbound on the pike when it collided headfirst with a 2011 Chevy Tahoe on the pike near Avenue A at about 9:30 a.m. The Tahoe was driven by Chief Daren Dooley of the prosecutor's office.

The driver of the Sunfire was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. Notification to family members have not been completed by Thursday afternoon, police said.

Dooley's vehicle overturned. He was transported by Galloway Ambulance to the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.

The Galloway Township Police Department and the state police are conducting the investigation. The roadway closed after the accident but reopened at 12:30 p.m.

Vehicles were detoured on local streets, which caused local residents to come out of their homes to find out what was causing all the unexpected traffic.

Atlantic County Prosecutor Ted Housel has no comment on the accident, spokeswoman Haleigh Walz said.

Mayor Don Purdy said the stretch of road is not considered particularly hazardous.

"It's something that happens on every highway," he said. “It’s a tragedy, but it could have happened on any highway.”
