The National Weather Service is forecasting precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch for South Jersey, but it appears the area will avoid the snowfall accumulation expected today in northern parts of the state.

The northwest and central parts of the state are likely to see the most snow Tuesday, while forecasters are calling for a possible wintry mix elsewhere.

A winter weather advisory is in effect until 7 p.m. for Sussex, Morris, Somerset, Warren and Hunterdon counties, where accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are possible.

In South Jersey, rain is likely before 4 p.m., with a chance of rain continuing into the evening hours.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
