Repairs to a crack in an auxiliary spillway that may have caused a sinkhole in Tuckerton will be completed over the next few weeks, a state spokesman said.

The sinkhole on a sidewalk on Route 9 was found in July and temporarily closed the road while emergency repairs were done. The sinkhole was filled in and a metal plate was placed over it, said Joseph Dee, a Department of Transportation spokesman.

The DOT left the metal plate over the sinkhole in order to monitor the area for further sinking. Dee said once repairs are completed on the auxiliary spillway, the plate will be removed and brick pavers will be replaced.

The DOT is completing a new spillway project in the vicinity of the sinkhole that will carry water from Lake Pohatcong under Route 9 to Tuckerton Creek.

Before work started on the new spillway there was a main spillway and an auxiliary spillway at the lake and dam. It was determined that a crack in the auxiliary spillway was the likely cause of the sinkhole, Dee wrote in an email.

Work on the new spillway is expected to be completed in the spring of 2013.
