Assemblyman John Amodeo confirmed Monday he is running for re-election, despite rumors in recent months that he might be selected to head the South Jersey Transportation Authority.

"I've always said that I would be running for re-election, even as far as six or eight months ago when those rumors first came up," the Republican representing Atlantic County said.

Amodeo, a former Linwood councilman, had previously told The Press of Atlantic City that he and fellow Republican Assemblyman Chris Brown were preparing for re-election this year. He confirmed it Monday morning on Harry Hurley’s “Hurley in the Morning” radio show.

It will be Amodeo's fourth Assembly campaign.

The 62-year-old semi-retired crane operator who now lives in Margate has also said he would like to be on a ballot with Gov. Chris Christie, who will be running for re-election and is currently enjoying very high approval ratings following his handling of Hurricane Sandy recovery.

Republicans believe county Democrats may nominate Atlantic County Freeholder Colin Bell as one of the candidates to run against Amodeo and Brown. Bell was sworn into his first term on the Board of Chosen Freeholders earlier this month by Senate President Stephen Sweeney, D-Salem, Gloucester, Cumberland.

Bell, an attorney with Hankin, Sandman & Palladino, has not announced his candidacy.

Amodeo said the main reason he seeks re-election is that he hopes to accomplish a lot in another term, hoping that Republicans can win a majority in the state Senate on the coattails of Christie.

"He's the premier governor in the country," Amodeo said. "For Republicans, it's good to have a leader like him at the helm."

Amodeo said he and Brown will make a formal announcement of their plan to run for re-election at 1 p.m. Sunday in the Somers Point VFW Hall at 500 Bethel Road. The event will be open to the public.
