Former Atlantic City Fire Chief John Bereheiko died Saturday, the current chief said.

An announcement went out over the scanner about 8:30 Saturday night.

Bereheiko retired in March 2007 after almost 31 years in the Fire Department.

“He was really a dedicated firefighter,” said Dennis Brooks, who followed him as chief. “His heart and soul was totally into the job.”

Even after retiring, he continued to be connected to fire service, selling fire apparatus, Brooks said.

Bereheiko’s son, Joseph, is a city police officer.

“The whole family’s in public safety,” Brooks said.

Brooks said Bereheiko died at about 5 p.m. Saturday in a hospital in Philadelphia. He did not know the cause of death, but said the former chief had some health issues.

He will reach out to Bereheiko’s widow to see about funeral arrangements and giving him a full firefighter’s funeral.

“We’ll do whatever they want,” Brooks said.
