An operator of a ride at Gillian’s Wonderland Pier in Ocean City where a 4-year-old was injured Sunday afternoon has been fired, state officials said Monday.

Ocean City police said they responded at 3:06 p.m. Sunday to the pier to assist with a report of an injury.

An investigation of the accident on the Speedway ride determined that the incident was caused by operator error, Lisa M. Ryan, a spokeswoman for the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs, said in a statement.

“The injured individual was on the platform when the ride started,” Ryan said. “There are conflicting reports about whether she was in the ride vehicle and exited the ride prior to it starting or if she entered the platform after the ride was loaded. The park has reported to us that the operator was terminated.”

Ryan said that an inspection and operational test on the ride and found no mechanical problems and it has been reopened.

Details on the extent of the child’s injuries were not available.
