Three people were injured during a motor vehicle accident on Route 40 in Hamilton Township Thursday afternoon.

Police responded to milepost 47.4 at 1:58 p.m. after a vehicle driven by Kathleen Costello, 51, of Margate, was traveling eastbound on the roadway and crossed into the westbound lane and sideswiped a vehicle driven by Irene Rankin, 71, of Mays Landing, police said in a release.

Costello then struck another vehicle driven by 21-year-old Galloway Township resident Sandy Williams Jr., police said.

Costello, Williams and an unidentified passenger in Williams’ car were transported to various hospitals for non life threatening injuries, police said.

The roadway was shut down to traffic for about an hour, police said. The Hamilton and Galloway rescue squads and the Mays Landing Fire Department assisted at the scene.

The accident is under investigation and no summonses were announced.
