NEW BRUNSWICK — The two governing boards at Rutgers University have approved absorbing most of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey.

Gov. Chris Christie signed a law in August to give Rutgers control of two medical schools and most other parts of UMDNJ.

The most fiercely debated part of the original plan would have given Rowan University control of Rutgers' campus in Camden. But that did not make the final plan.

Instead, Rutgers and Rowan agreed to collaborate on health science education and research.

Rutgers and UMDNJ have already been working out the technical details of the change, which takes effect in July 2013.
