The cause of a house fire in Sea Isle City Wednesday evening still is under investigation, police said.
The house, which is on the 300 block of 40th Street, is owned by Dennis and Peggy Quinn.
Neighbor Annie Hall said her son noticed smoke next door about 7:30 p.m. and she screamed for someone to call 911.
"There were these huge rolling volumes of smoke," she said. "The whole neighborhood was full of smoke."
Dennis Quinn was at dinner and Peggy Quinn was visiting her daughter in North Jersey.
Firefighters arrived quickly and the flames were out after 8 p.m., Hall said. However, the fire had traveled throughout the house and the heat melted the siding on a neighbor's house.
On Thursday morning, a stream of people was driving by or riding bikes to see what happened. The building had been boarded up, with charred debris sitting outside and water from firehouses still saturating the stone driveway. Peggy Quinn was on her way home, while the owner of La Costa restaurant and motel just down 40th Street gave the Quinns a room indefinitely, Hall said. He also already offered to hold a benefit for the couple, Hall said.
The Cape May County Fire Marshall's Office said the cause of the fire was not suspicious, but was still under investigation.
