A man caught shoplifting by an off-duty Pleasantville police officer Sunday punched the officer as he was trying to arrest the suspect, police said.

Officer Elvis Nunez was at the CVS in Pleasantville when he saw the man steal several bottles of shampoo, Sgt. T.J. Zyckowski said.

When Nunez and the store's loss prevention officer confronted the man in the parking lot, the man punched Nunez after he identified himself as an officer, Zyckowski said.

Jorge L Gonzalez-Robles, 50, of Pleasantville, is charged with robbery, aggravated assault of a police officer and resisting arrest.

He is being held at the Atlantic County Justice Facility in lieu of $50,000 bail set by Judge Billie J. Moore.
