A fugitive Egg Harbor City man has been charged with aggravated assault in an incident in Mullica Township on Thursday in which an officer fired his gun during a confrontation with the man.
The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office charged Alexander Nayaran, 36, with aggravated assault while eluding a law enforcement officer and with eluding police, acting Atlantic County Prosecutor Jim McClain said in a statement.
A warrant has been issued for Nayaran’s arrest, McClain said. Bail has been set at $50,000 cash.
At 4:40 p.m. Thursday, a Mullica Township police officer pulled over Nayaran’s car near Moss Mill Road and Darmstadt Avenue.
During the stop, McClain said, “a struggle ensued between Nayaran and the officer, in which Nayaran caused bodily injury to the officer while attempting to flee.
The officer subsequently fired his service weapon, and Nayaran fled in the vehicle.”
Police later discovered the car abandoned in a residential neighborhood in Galloway Township but were unable to locate Nayaran.
The officer, whose name was not released, sustained a nonlife-threatening injury during the incident. He was treated and released from AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, Mainland Campus.
The search for Nayaran continued Friday, McClain said. The Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Major Crimes Unit was leading the investigation.
