The Somers Point Police Department has two new captains, filling positions that have been vacant for over a year.

Michael Sweeney and Robert Somers were sworn in at the City Council meeting Thursday night in front of a standing-room-only crowd.

They had been in line for the promotions for some time, Chief Michael Boyd said, and the process and paperwork took time.

Councilman Sean McGuigan thanked the officers for making the choice of becoming a police officer, considering the effect it has on their families.

Somers has been on the force since 1990, and his younger brother, Chuck Somers is a sergeant in the department.

Sweeney has been on the force since 1991, and his mother recently retired from the school district, Boyd said.

Mayor Jack Glasser said he has known "Bobby" Somers since he was 16 and was happy and honored to swear him in.

The new captains will begin in their new positions Feb. 1.
