The state Department of Environmental Protection has warned against boating, crabbing or fishing in the Barnegat Bay north of Barnegat Light because of Hurricane Sandy.

The DEP said that testing probably found elevated levels of contaminants because of several wastewater treatment plants were knocked offline in the storm. The agency recommended people wash, clean and disinfect all gear after leaving the water.

Streams and rivers that empty into the bay are also covered by the new advisory. The DEP said that the southern half of the bay was not under advisory, but testing continued.

The DEP continued an earlier fishing and boating advisory for northern waters including the state’s portion of the Hudson, Passaic, Raritan and Hackensack rivers, the Newark, Sandy Hook and Raritan bays, and both the Arthur Kill and Kill Van Kull.
