The state Department of Education has extended the deadline for parents to participate in the new Interdistrict Public School Choice Program.
The DOE this week announced 56 districts had been approved to accept students from other towns, at no cost, beginning in September.
Under the new timeline, parents have until May 2 to notify their hometown school district that they plan to have their child attend a choice school in September. They previously had until April 25.
Districts can limit the number of children who leave and must notify parents by May 9 if they have been given approval to participate.
Parents must then apply to the new choice school by May 16. The choice district must notify the parent of their child’s acceptance or rejection by May 27. A waiting list can be started for students not initially accepted.
Parents of accepted students have until June 10 to enroll in the choice district. If they choose not to, the district can accept another student from the waiting list.
Locally approved new choice schools and districts include Estell Manor, Port Republic, Hammonton High School, Ocean City High School, Downe Township, Lawrence Township, Maurice River Township, Beach Haven, Central Regional, Eagleswood Township, Long Beach Island Consolidated, Ocean Gate, and Tuckerton.
