Icy conditions contributed to nearly two dozen crashes Saturday afternoon along a 10-mile stretch of the Garden State Parkway in Lacey Township, killing one man and causing lengthy traffic delays.

State police said more than 20 crashes involving more than 40 vehicles, occurred during an hour and a half period between mileposts 70 and 80

Sgt. Adam Grossman said one man was killed after he was struck while he was helping move a disabled vehicle to the shoulder. Grossman said four people from one vehicle stopped to help move the disabled vehicle, when the man, of unknown age and hometown, was struck by a passing vehicle. The man was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center, where he died.

Police continue to investigate the circumstances of that incident as well as all of the other accidents.

The National Weather Service had issued a special statement warning that sleet and snow could accumulate as a storm system moved through the area. By 7 p.m. the NWS radar shows that all the precipitation has since moved offshore.
