STONE HARBOR - The borough officially opened its new recreational support building on Saturday.
The building and outdoor pavilion, located next to the 80th Street field, was designed to host a range of activities including basketball, volleyball, Zumba, arts and crafts, and other recreational opportunities, Mayor Suzanne Walters said.
"This building is a result of a lot of hard work and effort by many individuals in Stone Harbor,” Walters said.
Recreation Director Van Cathcart said he signed up for recreational programs in the community when he was a child. "This location was a garage at the time", Cathcart said. "The garage was extended until this great new building was constructed. We now have the ability to provide recreational programs that we have never been able to do before. The community of Stone Harbor was really the backbone of this project.”
Recreational programs will first be held at the new facility starting Monday.
Saturday's opening also featured performances by jazz musician Michael Pedicin and 12-year-old Wes Bernstein.
