The William J. Hughes Center honors five New Jerseyans

Former New Jersey Gov. Brendan T. Byrne is being honored for his career achievements as part of the new Hughes Center Honors awards meant to recognize a commitment to public service, civility and bipartisanship.

The William J. Hughes Center for Public Policy at Richard Stockton College will present Byrne with the Distinguished Lifetime Achievement Award, which was open to any outstanding citizen.

Former U.S. Rep. James Saxton Saxton will receive the Civility in Government and Politics Award meant for any individual in an elected or appointed position.

Dennis Bone, a retired Verizon executive, will be presented with the Excellence in Civic Engagement Award for his work as a trustee for the New Jersey Institute of Technology, the Newark Alliance, Liberty Science Center and other institutions.

Lori S. Herndon, president and chief executive officer of the AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, will receive the Distinctive Alumni Leadership Award for her work in developing new emergency and trauma departments, the Center for Childbirth, a patient tower, and the AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute.

Justin B. Frankel, a Stockton student serving as chairman for the Legislative Policies and Government Affairs Committee, won the Distinctive Student Leadership Award. Frankel graduates in May and will join the United States Marine Corps.

The awards will be presented at a reception at the Stockton Seaview Hotel and Golf Club in Galloway at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13.
