As many as 6,000 people are expected in Cape May County this weekend for the Mid-Atlantic National Cheerleading Championships, which will be held at the Wildwoods Convention Center.

This will be the eleventh year the event is held in Wildwood, and in that time the facility has proven itself an excellent venue, said Karen Drew, director of the event for Spirit Brands.

“It’s an absolutely phenomenal arena for cheer,” she said. “It’s just the way the bleachers are, the way we can lay everything out, and the staff is wonderful to work with.”

About 2,000 participants ages 2 and older will demonstrate their cheerleading chops in a team format Saturday and Sunday. Performances are choreographed and set to music or sound effects.

The top finishers in the elite categories will earn trips to the world championships at Disney World in Orlando, Fla., and the top teams among the 156 entered will also receive cash prizes.

Drew said the youngest competitors will go first thing in the morning both days, while the most talented will take the floor at about 5 p.m.

The event is a boon for the town in a traditionally slow week, Greater Wildwoods Tourism Improvement and Development Authority Director of Marketing Ben Rose said, generating 1,500 room nights in local hotels and more than $150,000 in food and beverage revenue each year.
