School board members from across the state will convene in Atlantic City Tuesday through Thursday for the annual New Jersey School Boards Association conference at the Atlantic City Convention Center.

About 5,000 board members, school administrators and charter school trustees are expected at the event, which features 150 workshops and training events over the three days.

State Education Commissioner Chris Cerf is scheduled to speak at 1 p.m. Tuesday. He is expected to address initiatives to close the achievement gap, reduce over-regulation and turn around low-performing schools.

A panel of state legislators will address upcoming legislation and take questions from the audience at 3 p.m. Wednesday.

Among the workshop topics are the new teacher-evaluation pilot programs, using social media in school, the role of school boards in anti-bullying law procedures, new state tests, student discipline and financial literacy.

The exhibit hall will feature vendors and school districts sharing effective programs. On Thursday, school board members will be able to undergo training required by the state School District Accountability Act.
