BRIDGETON — A grand jury this week indicted two men in the shooting death of a city resident near an apartment complex in January.
The indictment contains charges of murder, conspiracy, witness tampering, aggravated assault and weapons offenses against Paul Willoughby and Troy Donini.
Willoughby, of Stewart Lane in Fairfield Township, and Donini, of Landis Avenue in Vineland, are charged in connection with the slaying of Jermarl Dawkins.
Dawkins, 34, of Sunset Avenue, was shot multiple times and found dead Jan. 16 in a field on the property of the Burlington Manor Apartments on South Burlington Road. Authorities said they found Dawkins when they responded to reports of “man down and gunshots” received by police about 6 p.m.
Dawkins was apparently visiting someone at the apartment complex before he was shot, according to law-enforcement officials. Authorities have not released information regarding what prompted the shooting.
Willoughby was eventually found by members of the U.S. Marshal’s Service Fugitive Task Force at Tip’s Trailer Park on Route 49 in Fairfield Township. Charges were initially lodged against Donini while he was lodged in a detention facility in Sussex County, Delaware.
The defendants remained lodged in the Cumberland County jail.
The indictments were handed up by a grand jury sitting in the Cumberland County courthouse.
