VENTNOR — Three Ventnor homes suffered extensive damage in a blaze Tuesday afternoon.

Ventnor Fire Chief John Hazlett said the fire began at 3:15 p.m. on the roof of 3 S. Wyoming Ave. and spread to other homes at 5 S. Wyoming and 6 S. Rosborough avenues, causing a total of about $500,000 in damage, he said.

A strong breeze enabled the fire to spread, but the 34 firefighters who responded did an excellent job containing it quickly, Hazlett said. It was under control in about an hour, he said.

“They made an aggressive attack,” he said. “They should be commended for the job they did.”

One firefighter was treated and released at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus for heat exhaustion and minor injuries, he said.

No one was home at the time of the fire, and the American Red Cross supplied housing vouchers for the affected families, he said.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is under way, Hazlett said.
