The driver of a vehicle involved in a head-on collision Thursday in Pleasantville has died, police said.

Jose Matta, 53, of Pleasantville, was initially trapped in his vehicle with severe injuries after a car in the oncoming lane crashed into him on North Franklin Boulevard, police said. The driver of that vehicle fled the scene, only to return after police contacted him.

Matta was taken to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, and had been in critical condition for the past two days, police said. He died at 2:20 p.m. Saturday.

The driver who crashed into him, Carlos Fermin, 26, was taken to the Atlantic County jail. Bail was set at $20,000 cash. Fermin is charged with leaving the scene of an accident with serious injuries and being the unlicensed driver of a vehicle involved in such an accident.

Preliminary reports showed Fermin was driving south in an SUV, veered into the northbound lane and crashed head-on into Matta's pickup truck about 9:30 a.m.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, and anyone with information or who may have witnessed the crash is asked to call Pleasantville police at 609-641-6100. The crash is being investigated by Lt. Matthew Hartman and Patrolman Stacey Williams, of the Pleasantville Police Department, and Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office Fatal Collision Unit Sgt. Kevin Hincks.
