A Vineland juvenile was sentenced Monday to spend the next four years in custody for killing an elderly couple in an automobile accident at a busy intersection in his hometown on Feb. 15, authorities said.

Ryan May was “recklessly driving his vehicle in an excessive rate of speed” when he collided with a car containing Otneil and Eunice Viero at Chestnut Avenue and Eighth Street, acting Cumberland County Prosecutor Harold Shapiro said.

Otneil Viero was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. His wife died later at South Jersey Regional Medical Center in Vineland from injuries sustained in the accident. Both Vieros were 77 years old.

Shapiro said Superior Court Judge Benjamin Telsey sentenced May during proceedings at the Cumberland County courthouse in Bridgeton to serve four years in the custody of the state Juvenile Justice Commission. May was sentenced on a charge of death by auto, an offense to which he pleaded guilty Sept. 25, Shapiro said.

Vineland police said the accident occurred when the car containing the Vieros turned onto Chestnut Avenue from Eighth Street. May was driving in excess of the posted 40 mile per hour speed limit on Chestnut Avenue, Shapiro said.
