A Cumberland County grand jury this week indicted a Vineland man for allegedly trying to stab to death another city resident in October.

Rafael Mendez, 20, of the 400 block of West Cherry Street, is charged with criminal attempted murder and other weapons offenses.

Officials with the Cumberland County Prosecutor’s Office said Mendez remains in the Cumberland County jail in Bridgeton. He was admitted to the facility on $1 million bail shortly after his arrest in the Oct. 12 incident.

Vineland police said they were called to Third and Cherry streets that day and found 25-year-old Lourenzo Witt unresponsive with a stab wound to his chest.

Witt was first treated at the scene by Vineland Emergency Medical Services, police said. He was then transported to the trauma unit at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City.
