VINELAND — City police said they arrested two men who committed a string of burglaries at Chestnut Avenue businesses during the past few weeks.
Omar Collazo-Matias and Luis J. Colon were arrested late Sunday night, police said.
Police said Collazo-Matias, 21, of the 300 block of Axtell Avenue, is linked to 10 burglaries since Jan. 2.
The 24-year-old Colon, of the 500 block of South Fourth Street, admitted participating in multiple burglaries with Collazo-Matias, police said.
Local authorities said both men are charged with numerous counts of burglary, attempted burglary, criminal mischief and theft. Both men were lodged in the Cumberland County jail in Bridgeton on $50,000 bail each.
An investigation is continuing and more charges and arrests are pending, police said.
Police said Collazo-Matias was arrested after they responded to an alarm at 10:41 p.m. at the Giant Laundromat in the 300 block of West Chestnut Avenue.
Patrolman Brian Cole detained Collazo-Matias “in close proximity to the business,” which had a smashed glass front door, and further investigation linked Collazo-Matias to the laundromat burglary and nine others that occurred since Jan. 2, police said.
At about 11:25 p.m., police said Detective Ron Demarchi found Colon peeking into the windows of businesses near Sixth Street and Chestnut Avenue.
Colon matched the description of a suspect connected to earlier burglaries and had a hammer and screwdriver, police said.
Police said they detained Colon, who then made “incriminating statements” about participating in other burglaries with Collazo-Matias.
