VINELAND — The city’s Municipal Court building will be closed today as officials assess the damage from a lightning strike Wednesday afternoon, court officials said.

Municipal Court proceedings scheduled for today will be held at the county courthouse at Broad and Fayette streets in Bridgeton, said Carole Cummings, the municipal court division manager for the vicinage.

A determination on when the Municipal Court building on Landis Avenue will reopen will be made following a full damage assessment of the facility, she said.

City officials said the lightning strike damaged a chimney and part of the building’s roof. Cummings said part of the roof was damaged to the point where there were “major leaks in the court office.”

The city’s Municipal Court is not in session on Fridays. The court will also be closed Monday, which is Labor Day.

City officials said the building was evacuated after the lightning strike.

Cummings said there were no injuries, although some court workers were given precautionary evaluations by emergency personnel.
