VINELAND — City police are warning residents to watch out for a man — possibly wearing mascara — who may be involved in a burglary scam.

The warning stems from an incident Monday in which at least $1,000 worth of jewelry was taken from the home of an elderly woman in the 500 block of West Walnut Road.

Police allege the suspect lured the victim outside her home at around 3 p.m. for an undetermined amount of time. The suspect allegedly told the woman that he wanted to see the property line behind her home because some nearby buildings were to be demolished, they said.

Police said the suspect made a phone call while he was outside with the victim. The suspect eventually left the site, and the victim went back inside her house to find two bedrooms were ransacked, police said.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 20 and 30 years old, about 5-feet 10-inches tall with brown hair and thin, clean-shaven face. The victim said it appeared as though the suspect was wearing mascara, police said.

Anyone with information about the suspect can call the city’s Police Department at 856-691-4111. Crime Stoppers of Vineland is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the suspect’s arrest and conviction.
