A Vineland high school basketball coach and volunteer with foreign exchange students was arrested in Vineland on charges of exposing himself to two 17-year-old boys.
John Kinka, 49, of East Chestnut Avenue in Vineland, who served as a volunteer assistant coach for the Vineland High School girls basketball team and as a volunteer for the ASSE International Foreign Exchange Program, was charged with lewdness and distributing alcohol to minors. Kinka, who police said did not cooperate with the investigation, was released on a summons.
Kinka agreed to host two foreign exchange students who were staying in Delaware at his home last weekend so they could attend a conference in Absecon on Saturday and Sunday, police said in a release.
On Saturday night, police said, Kinka gave the two juveniles vodka and played drinking games with them.
Police said at one point Kinka exposed his genitals to one of the juveniles and asked to see him naked. He then tried, unsuccessfully, police said, to pull down his pants.
The two victims left the residence and were approached by an off-duty police officer at approximately 4 a.m. Sunday, police said.
The juveniles did not report what happened. Their host family in Delaware picked them up at the city’s Police Station.
But police were alerted of the incident on Monday and began an investigation that led to the arrest Wednesday.
Police said Kinka has been removed as a volunteer with the foreign exchange program, and the Vineland Board of Education removed him as coach of the high school girls basketball team.
School district Superintendent Mary Gruccio said she did not know how long Kinka volunteered on the basketball team. When the district learned Wednesday of the arrest, Gruccio said, they told him he could no longer be involved at the school.
Gruccio said volunteer coaches are subject to background checks and fingerprint identification.
“It’s disappointing. People come here to do good things for us and the kids,” she said. “We are not going to take any chances with the kids.”
