The Republican and Democratic candidates for the state’s U.S. Senate seat formerly occupied by Frank Lautenberg will be decided by voters in a special primary today.

Newark Mayor Cory Booker, U.S. Rep. Frank Pallone, U.S. Rep. Rush Holt and Assembly Speaker Sheila Oliver will run in the Democratic primary. The Republicans have two candidates, former Bogota Mayor Steve Lonegan and Middlesex County-based physician Alieta Eck.

The special general election will be held on Oct. 16, and the winner will hold the seat until another election in November 2014.

Gov. Chris Christie appointed Attorney General Jeffrey Chiesa to fill the seat temporarily when Lautenberg died in June.

Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
