An Atlantic City man is wanted on charges of murder and weapons offenses in the killing of a man in Pleasantville last month.
Gregory J. Gibbs, 36, is accused of killing Chikki Smith, 33, who was found shot outside Sam’s Rialto Bar on South Main Street just before midnight Dec. 3.
Gibbs was charged with murder, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose in a warrant signed the day after the shooting.
His bail has been set at $1 million full cash by Superior Court Judge Max Baker.
In 2004, Atlantic City police found Gibbs in possession of a fully loaded Tech-9 semiautomatic pistol during a traffic stop. The serial number had been scratched off, and the gun was in a homemade leather sling, which police at the time said could be used for easy concealment.
Most recently, Gibbs was one of three men shot June 1, 2011, at Pleasantville’s Sassafras Run apartments. He was wounded in the foot.
Smith’s cousin Antuoine Harmon, 35, also was the victim of a homicide outside a bar last year. Harmon was hospitalized Sept. 15 after a fight outside Proud Mary’s Bar in Atlantic City. He died at a Camden County health care facility Nov. 11. An autopsy the next day ruled it a homicide.
There have been no arrests in that case, which had not previously been released as a homicide by authorities.
That brings to 19 the number of people killed in Atlantic City last year, including a police-involved shooting last month, which is still under investigation by detectives with the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office.
Smith, who lived in Atlantic City, was the sixth homicide victim in Pleasantville last year. Two days later, two teens were shot and killed, bringing Pleasantville’s total homicides to eight for the year.
