EGG HARBOR TOWNSHIP - Police attempted to pull over a black SUV Thursday afternoon, but instead of stopping, Danny Roberts sped off in his vehicle on the left shoulder of the road.

Police did not pursue the 23-year-old Mays Landing man, who was driving away on the Black Horse Pike in the area of English Creek Avenue, but used his license plate to locate a residence.

An officer went to the house on Primrose Court, and a black SUV began driving towards the officer, and began increasing speed, police said. The officer jumped out of the way and, uninjured, attempted to pursue the vehicle on his motorcycle, along with other officers.

The vehicle was found abandoned nearby, but the suspect had run away, police said. It was determined Roberts was picked up by his mother, Sherry Johnson, 46, in a taxi she drives.

Johnson was charged with hindering apprehension and released on summons.

Warrants have been issued for Roberts' arrest for aggravated assault on and eluding a law enforcement officer.
