WILDWOOD – Police credited two store employees with helping capture a suspect in an armed robbery here Tuesday.
According to a press release, police were called to Comercial Mexican Grocery Store, on the 3800 block of New Jersey Avenue, at 9:40 a.m. and learned that a man had walked into the store, displayed a knife and demanded money from the cashier.
The suspect then fled the store and two store employees followed.
Detective Sgt. Kenneth Gallagher called the employees’ efforts “essential in leading police to the location of the suspect (identified as Christopher Perillo, 23, of Wildwood) and his apprehension.”
Investigators later recovered the knife and the cash,
Perillo was charged with first-degree armed robbery, fourth-degree possession of a prohibited weapon, and three counts of second-degree aggravated assault.
Perillo remained in the Cape May County Correctional Center on Wednesday morning in lieu of $300,000 bail.
Police are also investigating a second similar armed robbery which took place Saturday at Bautista’s Food Market, 3703 Pacific Ave.
According to the release, the suspect was also armed with a knife and robbed the cashier of a unknown amount of cash.
