WILDWOOD — The city has approved an ordinance that requires background checks on employees and volunteers acting on behalf to the city.
Under the new regulations, all full-time, part-time and seasonal employees as well as volunteers must pass a criminal background check.
The new requirement applies to all applicants for employment with the city and all of its agencies, divisions or programs, city officials said.
In a statement, Commissioner Anthony Leonetti said the measure was in the best interest of the city.
“Today, criminal background checks are essential to ensure that our resort community hires qualified staff with a clean history, no matter what position they hold,” Leonetti said.
The criminal background checks will be performed by the New Jersey State Police.
“With this kind of safeguard, residents and visitors can rest assured that the city employees and volunteers they meet each day have no history that would disqualify them from service,” Leonetti said.
Mayor Ernie Troinao Jr. said Monday that the checks would be made on any new applicants, but did not apply to exisiting employees.
“You just want to make sure people are worthy of the positions they are applying for,” Troiano said.
He added that such checks are common place in schools and other organizations and are a matter of safety for the public.
