BRIDGETON — A 54-year-old Delaware woman’s death that remained a mystery for at least 24 hours as police investigated the incident was ruled an accident Friday.

Bernadette Montgomery, of New Castle, was found dead, partially on the roadside and partially on the curb at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. She apparently fell under the rear bus tires of an NJ Transit bus she had just disembarked from, police said Friday.

Bridgeton police Capt. Michael Gaimari said evidence from the scene, paired with “video surveillance from several businesses, statements taken from witnesses and preliminary autopsy findings” indicate the victim fell shortly after exiting the NJ Transit Route 410 bus. he said the bus' passenger side rear tires then ran over the victim.

Giamari said the driver was located in his bus parked in the Hancock Center parking lot on Route 49 shortly after the incident.

The bus driver's identity was not released, and police say he may not have realized what had occurred.

The autopsy was conducted Friday morning at Shore Medical Center in Somers Point.

The incident will be investigated further by the Bridgeton police and Cumberland County Prosecutor's office. Any information can be given to the police department at (856) 451-0033.
