MIDDLE TOWNSHIP – A Philadelphia woman was injured and her dog killed when they were struck by a car while walking near the 96th Street bridge on Tuesday.

Police were called to the bridge at 10:10 am for a report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle. Police said Regina Mullen, 38, was on the sidewalk, waiting to enter the cross walk.

A vehicle traveling east into Stone Harbor stopped to allow the pedestrian to cross, but another driver, Pedro Jimenez-Avila, 32, of Lower Township, did not see the pedestrian.

Police said he ran off the road to the right to avoid striking the stopped car, and struck Mullen and her dog. She was transported to AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus, by Stone Harbor Rescue and released as of Wednesday. The dog was killed on impact.

Jimenez-Avila was charged with failure to maintain a lane and careless driving. The investigation is ongoing.
