Cape May County Prosecutor Robert Taylor announced Wednesday he will step down at the end of the week.

First Assistant Prosecutor Robert Johnson will be sworn in to take his place on an interim basis during a ceremony on Friday.

Taylor, 70, reached the maximum age for the position of prosecutor and decided to retire instead of applying for a temporary extension to finish his term, according to state Sen. Jeff Van Drew.

Taylor, a Democrat and former municipal judge, was appointed to the post 13 years ago by then-Gov. John McGreevey.

Van Drew, D-Atlantic, Cape May, Cumberland, said he nominated Taylor for the position and is proud of the work Taylor has done in the community.

“He has been on the cutting edge of issues like bullying and cracking down on heroin,” Van Drew said. “He really put his heart into it and has always kept the lines of communication open with me and the community in general.”

Van Drew will nominate a new prosecutor to take Taylor’s place. In the meantime, Johnson will fill the role.

Van Drew said Taylor told him months ago of his plans to step down and that he has already interviewed several people for the position.

No decision will be made until after the election in November to avoid politicizing an appointment, he said. After he makes his decision, Van Drew will send a letter to the Governor’s Office and his nominee will be interviewed by the Senate Judiciary Committee and then face a confirmation vote before the full Senate.
